Isla Vista is a college town, and its law enforcement needs are met by officers working out of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol Station. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies on bicycle patrol as well as UCSB police and CHP officers operate out of the station to provide policing to the community and the University of Santa Barbara.
When someone is arrested, they are taken to the Santa Barbara Sheriff Station to undergo booking and processing. This procedure includes taking the arrestee’s photograph, recording their fingerprints and conducting a national background check. Once this process has been completed, bail will be set for those who are eligible and it will be possible to be released via bail bond.
What is a Bail Bond?
A bail bond, also known as a “surety bond,” is the most common way to get someone out of jail. When someone is charged with a crime, the courts want to ensure that the defendant will attend their court dates. The easiest way to do this is to keep the person in custody until that date and time arrives, and then transport the defendant to the courtroom. However, it’s possible to pay money to the court to allow the inmate their freedom pending the trial. If the defendant shows up on time to all of their court dates, then the money is refunded. If they do not, then the money is forfeited to the courts and a warrant is issued for the defendant’s arrest.
The amount of money required by the court to secure someone’s release is known as “bail,” and it can be quite expensive. When someone is unable to hand over that much cash to the courts, they go to a bail bondsman who’s fee is only 10% of the total bail amount. After working with a bondsman and paying the fee, a bail bond will be posted at the jail and the inmate will be released. It’s important to note that just like when cash is paid directly to the courts, the person who signs the bail bond is who will be responsible for paying the full amount of bail if the defendant does not show up. Only bail out those whom you know and trust. We offer payment plans, just give us a call.
Why Bail Someone Out?
When someone is in police custody, they are unable to tend to any responsibilities that exist int he outside world. Depending on how long the individual is in police custody, jobs can easily be lost, classes can be failed, and even homes can be lost if rent or mortgage payments are not paid on time. When you bail someone out, you give them the opportunity to continue attending work and/or school, find an attorney, attend to family obligations and make arrangements if they expect to be in jail for a period of time.
The Bail Bond Process
