On January 20th, Santa Clarita Sheriff Station deputies received an anonymous tip via L.A. Crimestoppers about a possible marijuana grow house in Canyon Country. Deputies were able to obtain and serve a search warrant on the property and, once inside, they found that every room in the house was being used to grow marijuana. They also found a firearm and illegal wiring and drainage.
No arrests were made after the discovery, and the investigation into the grow house is still ongoing.
Proposition 64 legalized recreational marijuana and allows for the growing of up to a certain number of plants. The rules of the law are as follows: you must be 21 or older, you can grow no more than six plants at once, it must be grown only where you live and it cannot be seen. It must also be locked up. As far as possession goes, you are only able to have in your possession 28 grams (one ounce). Cities can ban outdoor growing but not indoor growing.
The grow house contained far more than six plants, though depending on the nature of the grow, the owner may not be in as much trouble as some others. They will still be on the hook, however, for the illegal wiring and drainage. Only time will tell if criminal charges will be filed.
It’s possible that the growers had special licensure that allowed them to grow more than the 6 plant limit imposed on most residents. Growers who grow marijuana for dispensaries or for medical purposes can obtain such licenses allowing them to grow more than six plants without incurring any legal penalties. However, as mentioned, the wiring and the drainage in this grow house were illegal, so it’s possible that the grower may be penalized for that. Additionally, a firearm was found at the scene.
