Porch pirates, or those who follow delivery trucks to steal packages from outside homes are responsible for upwards of $12 billion in thefts, and peak season is just arriving. Luckily, the states hit hardest by porch piracy do not include California, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen here (it totally does).
Nobody can realistically keep themselves 100% safe from every type of crime, but there are a few things you can do to drastically minimize your risk. These thieves are nothing if not opportunists, and taking steps to make stealing your packages harder can go a long way toward deterring would-be pirates from looting your Holiday booty.
Tip #1 Ask A Neighbor
If you know you have a delivery coming and you have neighbors who are usually home during the day, ask them to grab your package once it arrives. As long as you know them reasonably well, most people are happy to help.
Tip #2 Keep Cameras Visible
Hidden security cameras can be nice because thieves won’t know they’re being recorded and it can be easier to catch them. However, when thieves can see an open, obvious camera, they’re less likely to strike.
Tip #3 Deliver to a Secure Location
If you really want to make sure nobody steals your packages while you’re not home, don’t have them delivered to your home! Some workplaces will allow you to have packages shipped there. Otherwise, if you have friends, family, or neighbors whom you know well and they are home during typical work hours, ask to have your package delivered there. That way you don’t have to worry about it at all.
Tip #4 Track Your Packages
Last but not least, make sure you know what’s coming and when. Many delivery companies offer text updates that can indicate when your packages ships, arrives at the distribution center, and then is delivered to your home. Don’t leave it up to chance – know what’s coming and when.
