With the recent tragedy in Paris still fresh in the minds of the world, law enforcement agencies are stepping up their efforts to respond to similar threats. On Thursday, November 19, deputies working out of the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station held a first-responder training exercise from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The exercise included deputies, local firefighters, medical responders and even helicopters as they practiced coordinating their efforts in the event of a shooter.
Sheriff’s sgt. David Shoemaker made the point that, with current events being what they are in the world, it’s important that local law enforcement are prepared to handle situations like that, should they arise.
The training exercise will be observed by an FBI agent, and will include two separate scenarios involving an armed suspect. Law enforcement is going all-out on the exercise, and it may include simulated gunfire and smoke.
The exercise is one of many responses taking place across the country in lieu of the deadly attacks in Paris, France last week. Gunmen are said to have claimed the lives of 129 people. and injured hundreds more in what have been officially labeled coordinated terrorist attacks.
The location of the exercise will be between Six Flags Magic Mountain and the Henry Mayo Hospital, and officials have notified the public that if they hear gunfire coming from the direction of Magic Mountain, it’s likely due to the training. If they hear gunfire coming from someplace else, call the Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121.
