During their investigation into a spate of robberies and other crimes that occurred between August and October of this year, the LAPD has announced that they apprehended a Canyon Country man in connection to these incidents. The crimes involved a kidnapping, carjacking, and several ATM thefts.

The suspect, a 40-year-old Canyon Country man, was arrested and charged with one count of carjacking and five counts of commercial burglary. The commercial burglary counts are in connection with several incidents where ATMs were stolen from local businesses. The suspects got the machines by forcing the front door open and tying a chain around the ATM. The chain was attached to a truck which would then yank it out of the store. After removal, they’d load it up and bust it open to steal the money, and then dump it.

A combined effort between Mission-area detectives and the Metropolitan Division were able to connect a series of robberies to the ATM thefts and identify suspects. Warrants were then served in Canyon Country and Sylmar resulting in four arrests.

Arroyo is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Commercial burglary is covered under California Penal Code 459 PC and is described as entering any commercial structure or locked vehicle with the intent to commit grand larceny, petty larceny, or any felony once inside.

Commercial burglary is also known as second-degree burglary and is the lesser of the two crimes, with the more serious being first-degree burglary. While first-degree burglary is considered a felony, second-degree burglary is a “wobbler” that can also be charged as a misdemeanor under certain circumstances.

The penalties for misdemeanor commercial burglary include up to 1 year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000. Felony charges carry the potential penalties of 16 months to 3 years in jail. First-degree burglary is always a felony with the potential penalties including 2 to 6 years in prison.
