The holiday, Cinco de Mayo, or the 5th of May is celebrated by Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and those of every background. This year, the holiday will be celebrated during this entire weekend and carry on through Monday, May 5th, 2014.
Often mistaken as Mexican Independence Day, it was on May 5th, 1862 that general Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin defeated the French army at the Battle of Pueblo in an unlikely victory. The actual Mexican independence day is September 16th.
Like St. Patrick’s Day, this holiday is synonymous with drinking, eating, parties, parades and many Cinco De Mayo celebrations, in Los Angeles, and law enforcement is well aware of this.
Over this weekend, the LAPD and LASD will be performing DUI checkpoints throughout the city in an attempt to deter those who would choose to drive while under the influence and to keep the roads as safe as possible.
- On Saturday, May 3rd, there will be a checkpoint at Laurel Canyon Blvd. at Oxnard Street in North Hollywood from 8pm to 2 am.
- There will be another checkpoint in the City of Norwalk, though the exact location has not been released.
- A North Hollywood DUI checkpoint will be held at Cahuenga Blvd. at Broadlawn Dr., from 8pm to 2am.
- On Monday, Cinco De Mayo, there will be saturation patrols (an increased number of police cruisers on the roads) in the Central area, the Southwest area and in Hollywood.
There will likely be other DUI checkpoints in undisclosed locations across the entire city, not to mention the increased awareness of police who are on patrol.
So, if you decide to partake in a few Coronas, or Dos Equis, Tecate, Modelo, Margaritas or Tequilas this weekend, remember to nominate a designated driver, call a taxi, or make some sort of arrangements to keep yourself, your friends and your loved ones safe.
From our team at SCV Bail Bonds to you and yours, have a Happy Cinco de Mayo!
