Recently, LASD deputies responded to a report of a fire in Neenach, a small, unincorporated town a little north of Santa Clarita. According to LASD Spokesman Lt. Chris Bergner, deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station responded to a report of an “explosion” in Neenach last Tuesday, at about 9 p.m. After fire department personnel extinguished the blaze, deputies investigated the scene to search for individuals who may have been injured in the blast. It was during that investigation that they discovered what could possibly have been a “honey oil” lab.
“Honey oil” is another term for concentrated cannabis. It is created in labs, like the one mentioned above (though most of them don’t explode), and contains very high amounts of the psychoative ingredient in marijuana: THC.
The production of concentrated cannabis, or “honey oil,” is a felony in the State of California and carries with it the possible sentence of 16 months to 3 years in county jail. Additionally, if a chemical substance is used in the creation of the “honey oil,” such as butane, individuals can be guilty of the crime of “chemical extraction of a controlled substance.” That crime enhances the penalty for simply producing concentrated cannabis from a few years in county jail to a possible fine of up to $50,000 and anywhere from 3 to 7 years in state prison.
According to Lt. Bergner, no suspects have been arrested or identified in relation to the “honey oil” lab in Neenach. The investigation, however, is still ongoing.
