Do you have a gift for your Valentine picked out already? Here in sunny Los Angeles, Valentine’s Day is a holiday in which we can choose many destinations in which to celebrate, be it the beach, the mountains or in the city. This is the day we pay special attention to those who have captured our hearts.
But what about our actual hearts? What a coincidence (or is it?) that Valentine’s Day should be in February, which is also national heart month.
As it turns out, some of the traditional Valentine’s Day gift ideas are surprisingly heart-healthy. Here’s a look at some of them, and their health benefits.
- Red wine has been associated with romance since time out of mind. It’s more or less well known that red wine, moderate amounts, can be good for your health. One of the reasons is because red wine contains polyphenols (antioxidants) – specifically resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown, in some studies, to limit atherosclerosis (the hardening of the arteries). Regular, moderate consumption of red wine has also been shown to increase levels of HDL, or “good cholesterol” in the bloodstream as well.
- Chocolate begins its life as a plant, and like many other plants, it contains polyphenols and flavonoids – just like red wine! Chocolate can have positive effects on blood pressure, cholesterol levels and it also contains antioxidants. But wait! Before you go out and buy a bunch of “heart healthy” chocolate, it should be noted that most chocolates on the market are highly processed. If you want to get something that tastes great and has some health benefits, be prepared to shell out a few more dollars on something a little more high quality.
Even though both of these Valentine’s Day staples have some health benefits, it’s always a good idea to consume them both in moderation – especially if you plan on driving. The Los Angeles Police Department and Sheriff’s Department will be on the look out for motorists showing signs of possible DUI this weekend, as will law enforcement in greater Los Angeles.
If you do go out on the town to partake in plenty of wine and chocolate this Valentine’s Day, make sure you eat enough, and designate a sober driver. Better yet, cook dinner for your loved one at home. That way, the love and the wine can flow freely!
From the SCV Bail Bonds family to yours, have a loving and happy Valentine’s Day!
