It’s Christmas time — traditionally a time to spread cheer, celebrate with friends and loved ones and mail out your annual season’s greetings.
It’s interesting to know, Christmas has been celebrated on December 25th every year since the 4th century AD – according to late Roman History.
Some old and new customs enjoyed during that time exist today, such as decking the halls, (decorating one’s home); the use of greenery, (Christmas trees, Mistletoe and Garland), eating various, special occasion foods, (fruitcake and sugar cookies), gift-giving, (e.g., iTune gift cards) and singing Christmas carols, (with your new karaoke machine!)
While Christmas’ primary purpose is to celebrate the birth of Christ, the Holiday is also associated with the mythical St. Nicholas, believed to have been a Bishop in Asia Minor during the 4th century.
While many historians aren’t entirely sure that St. Nicholas actually existed, many miracles have also been associated with him, and some countries have gone as far as to name him as their Patron Saint.
As a National major Holiday, Christmas provides many with the opportunity to celebrate in various ways, from traditional family gatherings to office Christmas parties, Christmas cruises or helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
And we wouldn’t be doing our job in helping others, if we didn’t mention, that even though we all may be celebrating in many way this holiday season, safety should always be at top of mind.
Often, there are spikes in DUI related traffic accidents and arrests around the Holidays as people commute to and fro between parties, home and work.
If you decide to partake in a holiday favorite like spiced wine or brandy eggnog, remember to take appropriate steps to ensure your safety on the road, such as nominating a designated driver or having a friend pick you up and bring you home.
