A 19-year-old man was arrested after being discovered in the Malibu home of singer Lana Del Rey. According to reports, the man was seen entering the singer’s home by construction workers as it was undergoing renovations. The workers quickly called police, but the suspect had fled before they arrived.
After searching the premises, LASD deputies found items belonging to the suspect within the home, and used them to obtain his identity and location. Once located, he was arrested under suspicion of burglary and stalking.
Stalking charges in California are covered under California Penal Code 646.9 PC and can be described as following, harassing, or threatening a person to the point where the subject of the harassment fears for their or their families’ lives. 646.9 PC is a “wobbler” in California, meaning that it can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the circumstances of the crime and the defendant’s prior criminal history. If charged as a misdemeanor, the defendant faces any combination of informal probation, up to 1-year in county jail, a maximum fine of $1,000, counseling, and a restraining order.
If charged as a felony, the penalties include formal probation, 16-months to 5-years in state prison, a maximum fine of $1,000, counseling, a restraining order, and the possible requirement to register as a sex offender.
The suspect in the case has pleaded not guilty to charges of burglary and stalking, and the investigation is still ongoing.
