The “War on Drugs” is fought on many fronts, and in September, the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station will be initiating a program to inform Santa Clarita teens about the perils of drug use. The program is being instituted by Deputy William Velek of the Juvenile Intervention Team and will include a sequence of classes designed to inform high school aged teens of the nitty-gritty truth about drugs.
The classes will cover some of the most popular drugs of the day, including ecstacy, heroine and crystal meth, and the courses will consist of videos, lectures, discussions, reading and worksheets. Much like the D.A.R.E. program of the 80s and 90s, this new initiative promises not to pull any punches. Attendees will be shown what happens to the bodies, minds and lives of individuals who use dangerous narcotics and will teach youths valuable avoidance sills that can be employed when and if they encounter these substances in their daily lives.
The program is open to high school students and runs from September 9th, 2015 to November 10th, 2015. The classes are limited to the first 20 applicants and will be held at the Santa Clarita Activities Center. For more information, contact Deputy William Velek at wrvelek@lasd.org or 661-799-5163.
