In the early morning hours of Sunday October 16, the owner of a home on the 25000 block of Via Desca in Santa Clarita was outside smoking a cigarette when he was approached by someone wearing a clown mask and brandishing a machete. The homeowner then fired off a round into the air, which spooked the stranger enough to send him running.

Police were called shortly thereafter, and when they arrived on the scene the homeowner reported that the stranger in the clown mask was trying to break into his home and had threatened him with the machete. The person in the clown mask has yet to be identified, but unfortunately for the homeowner, he was arrested on firearm and narcotics charges.

Interestingly, not far away from the incident, another person in a clown mask was arrested and found to be in possession of burglary tools.

Sightings of clowns creeping around have been popping up all over the country, and nobody is sure why. The phenomenon appears to have begun in the recent past in South Carolina with rumors of creepy clowns trying to lure children into the woods. While there doesn’t appear to be any evidence of this actually happening, it’s certainly a scary concept. To a lot of people, there’s something odd about clowns, and as synonymous as they are with fun and entertainment, they’ve been associated with horrors, too. Notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy was known to dress up as a clown, and Stephen King’s IT also took a particularly chilling clown form.

While most of the clown sightings appear to be harmless – if creepy – some of the encounters, like those mentioned above, are decidedly less-so. If you see any creepy clowns lurking about, you should probably give the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station a ring to let them know.
