When arrested in Sherman Oaks, an inmate is booked and processed at the Van Nuys Community Police Station. The Van Nuys Community Police Station provides police services to the Sherman Oaks and Van Nuys neighborhoods, an area of 30 square miles with over 325,000 residents. It is under the jurisdiction of the Valley Bureau.
Defendants will be booked into the Van Nuys Jail, which is the largest jail in the San Fernando Valley. If they are not bailed out, they will go to court within 48 hours, then will be transferred from court to a larger county jail, such as IRC (inmate Reception Center) in downtown Los Angeles.
Booking and processing can generally take approximately, 2-4 hours at the Van Nuys Jail. It’s important to know the inmate is not eligible for release until their booking is complete, however, we can still work on the necessary paperwork prior to their being cleared.
It is much better to bail a person out at a like the Van Nuys Jail than it is to allow them to be transferred into one of the larger county jails where it can add as much as 24 hours to their release.
