Summer is a time for trips to the beach, backyard barbecues, apple pie, concerts in the park and all sorts of outdoor fun and activities. Whatever your personal summer activities include, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first.
Here are a few safety tips, thanks to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to help keep you and your loved ones safe this summer.
According to Deputy Josh Dubin, there are a few things that seem to cause recurring problems every summer. Some of these problems can be solved by common sense, such as making sure to always close and lock your door when you’re not going to be home (even for a short while) and never, ever leave your car running while you’re not in the vehicle.
On that note, don’t leave children and/or pets unattended in your vehicle for any length of time. The summer months can get blisteringly hot, and children and animals can overheat very, very quickly.
Since law enforcement is aware that more people are on vacation during the summer months, the SCV Sheriff Station increases their residential patrols in an effort to curb burglaries and other crimes.
The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station will be using Twitter under hashtag #SummerSafetyLA to tweet outsafety tips over the summer, including:
- Never leave your garage door open for an extended period of time, even if you’re in the house. Open garage doors are a prime target for “hot prowl” burglaries, allowing thieves to quickly perform thefts of any items they can carry away.
- Have newspaper and mail delivery halted while you are away to avoid giving would-be burglars the impression that you’re not home.
- Leave inside lights on timers so that your house isn’t dark at night, once again giving the impression that someone is home.
There will be many more safety tips tweeted out as the summer continues, and it’s nice to know that the SCV Sheriff’s Department is reaching out in an effort to protect the Valley residents during this time of the year.
