A man was arrested in Canyon Country on Monday, July 9th, after he allegedly entered a business and exposed himself to the woman working inside.
At around 3 p.m., the 25-year-old suspect, M. Salazar, walked into a business on Soledad Canyon Road and engaged the employee there in conversation. A short time after doing so, he allegedly pulled down his shorts and began fondling himself in front of her. The victim then ran out of the store and called 9-11.
The suspect was arrested about an hour later on suspicion of indecent exposure. He was taken to the Santa Clarita Sheriff Station where he was booked and held in lieu of $35,000 bail.
Indecent exposure is covered under California Penal Code 314 PC and is described as willfully exposing yourself to someone else for the purposes of sexual gratification OR to offend the other person.
Indecent exposure is a misdemeanor, which may make it seem like a relatively minor crime – but it isn’t. A first offense may net the defendant the typical penalty for misdemeanor-level offenses, which is up to 6 months in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000. However, a second offense becomes a felony can result in California state prison time. Additionally, any conviction under California Penal Code 314 PC carries with it a mandatory 10 year period where the defendant must register as a sex offender.
