Democrats are Seeking to Decriminalize Marijuana

California LawIn Washington, two House Democrats are seeking to decriminalize marijuana and allow individual States to choose how they regulate it.

Reps. Earl Blumenaur of Oregon and Jared Soto of Colorado sparked up some interesting conversation when they announced that they would be introducing two new bills to the House in coming weeks.

One bill would end the Federal ban and decriminalize marijuana for both personal and medicinal use while the other would levy a tax on its sales.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, a total of 18 states have legalized marijuana for medicinal use including California, Oregon and Washington D.C.

Washington State and Colorado have just recently passed laws legalizing marijuana for personal use this last election cycle.

A joint effort between Democrats and Republicans failed to make progress in the House in 2011.
